This lampoon was inspired by the assorted lifeguard stations in Miami Beach. A few years ago, there was a contest for different architects to design the new lifeguard stations and each architect did something a little different with structure and color within the limitations of the purpose.
Each one is unique and they were really challenging to paint on the lampoon's surface.
I love the way the individual lifeguard stations blend with the distant Miami Beach skyline depending on the neighborhood you're in.

The Guggenheim Museum on 5th Avenue inspired this lampoon. Filled with so much great art, like the Van Gogh's, Pissarro's and Bonnard's, my personal favorites. The outside structure itself is iconic and an architectural anomaly. The great painter,Mark Kostabi, recently commissioned one like this for his studio in New York.

I started the lampoon project after painting on uchiwa, the Japanese bamboo ribbed fans. Also made of rice paper, the watercolor and gouache get absorbed in multiple layers to deepen the color. A functional item, especially during August in Tokyo!
